Studies with Menopausal Women

In the first of these studies, researchers divided middle-aged women with moderate-to-severe psychological distress and depression related to menopause into two groups. One group was given daily fish oil supplements while the other group received a placebo.

  • After 8 weeks, the researchers found that those who took the fish oil supplements experienced a significant improvement in both their psychological distress scores and depressive symptoms compared to those who took the placebo.

In the second study, menopausal women were again divided into a fish oil group and a placebo group.

  • After 8 weeks researchers recorded the average number of hot flashes experienced per day by members of each group - and found that the odds of experiencing hot flashes had decreased three fold in the women who took fish oil.



Bottom Line: Due to its many health benefits , fish oil may be one of the best overall health supplements available. If you are going to take only one supplement - this should be the one!
