Foods That Burn Fat

Are there really foods that burn fat?

Could it actually be possible to lose weight by eating more of these foods instead of less?

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

But guess what? There are foods that burn fat!

And yes! Eating more of these foods can help you lose weight! Eating more of these weight loss foods will also help you avoid the hunger and feelings of deprivation associated with “dieting”.

A Brief History of Calorie Counting

So now you’re probably wondering how anything with calories could be a weight loss food rather than a weight gain food. After all, the calories you eat are converted to fat unless you “burn” them off, right?

Well, No. Not exactly.

The “caloric theory” of weight gain has become so widely accepted that the validity of theory is rarely challenged. So it might surprise you to learn that the idea of counting calories to lose weight was not based on science. Nor did it exist prior to the turn of the last century.

Losing weight by reducing the number of calories you eat was a concept that originated with a Los Angeles physician, Dr Lulu Hunt Peters in the early 1900s.

Following a lifelong struggle with obesity, Dr. Peters finally tried losing her excess weight by reducing the number of calories she ate - and managed to lose 70 of her 220 pounds.

She then passed her low-calorie formula for weight loss on to the public in her 1918 blockbuster book, Diet and Health with Key to the Calories.

At the time the book was published, the concept of calories was so new that Dr. Lulu actually had to tell her readers how to pronounce the word. But the desire to lose weight apparently wasn’t new.

Much to here amazement, Dr Peters’ book became a best seller - and low calorie dieting was on its way to becoming the “gold standard” for weight loss.

But there is a problem with calorie counting.

When a Calorie Isn’t a Calorie

Dr. Peters’ theory of weight loss assumes that the calories we eat are either burned as energy or stored as body fat. But the body does not act like a simple machine.

Not only can our bodies process calories in different ways but the amount of energy that each person uses for these processes is also different – even when we are at rest.

How much energy your body uses and whether you store excess calories as fat or use them to build muscle and other tissues is largely determined not by calories, but by hormones. And those hormones are influenced by...You guessed it...

The type of food you eat!

Weight Loss Foods: Introducing the Macronutrients

A macronutrient is a nutrient that your body uses for energy. There are three types of macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrate and fats.

While each macronutrient contains a certain number of calories...

...the macronutrient composition of your diet has a much greater effect on your body weight and composition than is indicated by its caloric content.

How Fat Burning Foods Work

In addition to having a different caloric content each of the different macronutrients has a different function and, when eaten, each induces a different hormonal response.

These hormonal responses, in turn, directly affect your metabolism.

And it is those metabolic effects which determine how your body process the calories you eat.

They also determine how much and what types of tissues your body will break down and utilize for energy.

In other words, the macronutrient content of your diet will largely determine whether you lose weight or gain it regardless of the number of calories you eat.

Choosing the Right Foods

To lose weight and create a lean physique you need to choose the right quantity and quality of macronutrients because, while some of the macronutrients act as foods that burn fat, others cause weight gain.
