What is Phen-Pro

Phen Pro is a combination of the medications Phentermine and Prozac.

Phentermine is a prescription weight loss medication that suppresses appetite. Unfortunately, when used alone, Phentermine tends to lose its effectiveness after several weeks.


Prozac is an antidepressant medication. Although Prozac has not been approved by the FDA for use in weight loss, Prozac has been shown to enhance - and extend - the effect of Phentermine on appetite.



How Effective is Phen- Pro?

Does the combination of these two prescription weight loss medications really work?

Yes!

While neither Phentermine nor Prozac causes weight loss per se , the combination of these two medications does suppress appetite for a prolonged period of time in most people. And that helps them lose weight.

In a study conducted by Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Prozac, obese patients lost an average of 11% of their original weights within 18 months of starting Phen-Pro. And 20% of those in enrolled in the study were able to reach normal weight status using this combination of medications.



5-HTP to the Rescue!

Although Prozac extends the efficacy of Phentermine, even Phen-Pro eventually loses its appetite suppressant effect on some people.

Adding 100 mg a day of 5-Hydroxytrytophan or 5-HTP usually restores the appetite suppressant effect of these medications.



Side Effects of Phen-Pro

Unlike the combination of weight loss medications known as Fen-Phen which was withdrawn from the market in 1997, Phen-Pro has not been associated with serious side effects.

The most commonly reported side effects of Phen-Pro are dry mouth, nervousness, increased sweating, constipation, rapid heartbeat and drowsiness.

While dry mouth is due to decongestant effect of Phentermine, the other effects can often be alleviated by switching to a different antidepressant.



Caffeine has been noted to increase the side effects of Phen- Pro without making it work better. So, if you decide to try this combination of prescription weight loss drugs, you will probably want to switch to decaffeinated coffee.
